This little craft and tape resist art project was inspired by a book that we read recently. In it, the kids lived near the ocean and there was a surf shop that the kids would bike to.

So I thought it might be fun to do some tape resist art and make a surfboard craft.

And it turned out to be a cute art and craft project for my boys.

Easy Surfboard Craft: What You'll Need

This craft is great for kids of all ages, even toddlers and preschoolers. Here's what you'll need:

  • White cardstock, cut into a surfboard shape
  • Painter's tape, cut into thin strips
  • Scissors to cut both the cardstock and the tape
  • Dot markers or washable kids' paint - You could also use crayons or markers too, if you'd prefer
First I cut a surfboard shape out of cardstock. I just eyeballed it. I ended up cutting out two surfboards, one for each of my boys. Next, I cut a piece of painter's tape lengthwise to create two skinny pieces of tape. I made the pieces of tape longer than the surfboard cutout so that I could also tape the paper down to the table to prevent it from moving while painting. I put the strips of painter's tape on the surfboard like so:

You could also use large craft paper to create a jumbo surf board shape. Something almost realistic in size. That might be fun too!

Anyway, once it's all cut out, then it's ready paint or decorate!  We personally used dot markers for this project since they're less messy than regular paint. But feel free to use whatever you'd like to color the surfboard.

After the paint's dry, simply peel off the tape to reveal the stripes on the surfboard. That's it!

Here are a couple of pictures of my boys, J and K, painting their surfboards. My youngest K preferred to stamp dots all over his, while my oldest J preferred layer different colors on top of each other. J also used his dot markers more like a paintbrush or traditional marker, dragging it back and forth to color the whole surface of the cardstock.

I love how simple this surfboard craft was to make! And my kids loved "painting" with the dot markers.
